Product Designs

Kente

Kente is an indigenous Ghanaian textile, made of interwoven cloth strips of silk and cotton. This fabric represents national cultural identity. Kente cloth varies in complexity. The designs and motifs in kente cloth are traditionally abstract, but some weavers also include words, numbers and symbols in their work today. Kente fabrics are very colorful but each color has a symbolic meaning. Today, kente cloth is recognized as the most well-known African textile. In the United States, kente patterns are popularly worn as graduation stoles by Black students.

Dashiki

The dashiki is a colorful fabric worn mostly in West Africa. It is called Kitenge in East Africa and has been a dominant wear in Tanzania and later Kenya. It is also known as Java since it is worn in Indonesia. It has formal and informal versions and varies from simple draped clothing to fully tailored suits. The dashiki found a market in America during the Civil Rights Movement and Black Power movement.

Ankara

Ankara fabric is the one of the most common type of African fabrics throughout the continent and is characterized by having bold colors and designs. It may also be referred to as African Prints, Wax Prints, Dutch Wax, Kitenge and Shweshwe among many other names. The material is most commonly printed on 100% cotton, but polyester and polycotton versions are becoming common. One of the best things about Ankara fabric is the intensity of its African prints does not change compared to other printed textiles that fade quickly. This is because of the “wax resistant” technique used in printing the textile.
